Standing in Line

November 07, 2024

I know, I know, voting sounds a bit unusual, but hear me out. I’m writing this because many of you vote absentee or early, and maybe someday I’ll do the same. But for me, there’s something really special about going to the polls on election day and standing in line to vote.

Why? Well, in this world where everything seems so extreme online, it’s a refreshing change to see it from a local perspective and actually see a line with Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, and Republicans standing, talking, and sharing their thoughts with each other. It’s like a big, friendly community gathering to do their civic duty. And in Fishers, it’s a beautiful mix of races and ethnicities all doing their part to make a difference. It’s heartwarming and reassuring.

Maybe, just maybe, we’re not as broken as the newsmakers on TV say. Maybe different people with different views aren’t as extreme and radical as social media would have us believe. For a moment, a diverse community was peacefully in line, with friendly faces and pleasant conversations. It gives me hope for a day before the noise and chaos take over again.

That’s why I love standing in line and voting on election day. It’s a simple act of democracy that connects us all and reminds us of the power of our voices.  Now back to our regularly scheduled dystopia…
